The Sacramento Kings have fired Luke Walton....FINALLY!
This was seen from a mile away. Sacramento's offense has been horrendous. One dimensional with no off-ball movement and a lot of 3-point shooting with really only one good shooter on the team. The unfortunate part of this whole thing is that this was during the midst of a losing streak instead of during the off-season when everyone in Sacramento saw how ineffective this Walton offense truly was. Now the #Kings will be moving forward with Assistant coach Alvin Gentry, who has seen a bit of success as a Head Coach in his career.
However, I don't expect much to change. You don't get much practice during the regular season and if you look back on Gentry's time with the Pelicans, the offense there was consistently criticized for its ineffectiveness. On a positive note, things can't get much worse for the #Kings.
At a 6-11 start to the season it was clearly time for a change. Could this move trickle into more moves to come? Say a trade perhaps? The team needs to do something here as the throwing up from the fan last night was a symbol of the Kings' season.
Most have already started the go get Ben Simmons campaign and who can blame them. There’s a 6’10 point/forward, All-Star potentially on the market and Sacramento is not willing to take a swing for the fences to give up some of their young talent. A disgruntled former #2 pick in Marvin Bagley, a frustrated sharpshooter in Buddy Hield, rookie sensation Tyrese Haliburton and two 1st round picks (one of them lottery protected) could get a deal like this done.
Sacramento has a Hall-of-Famer in Chris Webber who as a frustrated young talent who didn’t want to be in the cow-town that paid dividends for them taking a risk. I've been told that history has a way of repeating itself. Maybe now is that time.
Looking ahead the Kings have a rough five-game stretch where it will be tough for them to break this three-game losing streak. Tristan Thompson stated in a press conference recently that the team doesn’t need a head coach to inspire them to go out and play. We will have to see if that’s true on Monday when they faceoff against a Joel Embiid-less Sixers team.
